LEZO, Aklan — Two siblings drowned in a flooded irrigation canal in Brgy. Sta. Cruz Biga-a here on Sunday.
Lifeless bodies of nine-year-old Imee Gomez and seven-year-old Allen John Gomez were found floating by policemen and barangay officials at about 1 p.m.
The siblings were Grade 3 and Grade 1 pupils, respectively, of the Sta. Cruz Biga-a Elementary School.
At about 11 a.m., they asked permission from their parents to pick santol, said PO2 Roel Relator of the Lezo police station.
They were crossing a makeshift bridge at the irrigation canal when they fell into the water, Relator said, citing a witness.
The irrigation canal serves rice fields in Lezo, Makato and Numancia towns.
It has been frequently flooded during heavy rains since a portion of the road separating it from the Aklan River collapsed during the onslaught of typhoon “Quinta” last December. (By Ernan Baldomero)
